The Lions produced another assured display on Monday evening to deservedly clinch the Division 1 title and complete an outstanding Whalley Range Juniors league triple.
After winning the toss, Hale Barns chose to bat and made a positive start, reaching 27 without loss from the first five overs. On a fast, dry outfield, the Lions fielded with energy, intensity and bravery, providing excellent support for the bowling attack.
The breakthrough came in the sixth over when Hashim claimed the first of his three impressive wickets. One of those dismissals saw Isabella take a neat catch behind the stumps to remove the Hale Barns captain first ball. From that point onwards, the Lions gradually tightened their grip on the game. Excellent spells from Hattie and Zakki in the middle overs further restricted the scoring and brought regular wickets, with Hale Barns eventually limited to 68.
Chasing the target, the Lions remained fully focused and took nothing for granted. Ayaan and Hashim made a positive start, laying the foundations for the run chase. Although a couple of wickets briefly added some interest to the contest, Abdul soon shifted into hard mode, smashing two sixes and accelerating the scoring. Alongside Lakhan, they brought the game to a swift conclusion, scoring 19 runs from the final five balls to seal victory in style.
Thanks, as always, to our scorers (Emma and Angie), and to Shakir and Zahid for setting-up the pitch beforehand.
We know this is a talented group of players, with many currently representing, or having previously represented, county and regional teams, while several are already playing senior cricket. They have worked hard throughout the winter and into the season to maximise their potential. More importantly, they have grown into a genuine team.
This title win was not built on the performances of one or two superstars. At different points throughout the season, every player has stepped up to deliver crucial contributions with bat, ball and in the field. The defeat to Urmston proved to be a useful reality check, prompting the squad to reset and respond with a series of strong, and often dominant, performances against quality opposition including Timperley, Brooklands and Lindow.
Our attention now turns to the cup phase, with six games in six weeks and the opportunity to qualify for Finals Day. The squad will once again rely on our strength in depth, including from our title-winning U13s! With the confidence gained from a superb league campaign, the Lions will head into the next stage of the season believing we can compete strongly.
Well done, Lions!
